Internet Addicts in Danger Essay -- Technology Computers Communication

Internet Addicts in Danger Internet chat rooms have become a devastating disadvantage to the social interaction and growth of people in the world. More and more of the world’s youth are becoming addicted to Internet chat rooms. Not only are Internet chat room relationships leading to impersonal contact of people hiding flaws behind anonymity, they are leading to the abduction of many underage individuals. In an article published in The Age, a magazine in Melbourne, Australia, Doctor Mubarak Rahamathulla has researched teenagers that have become "pathologically addicted" to Internet chat rooms. Rahamathulla argues that this addiction could damage their social skills as well as their ability to form intimate relationships. Rahamathulla says that "The young people who are introverts who are having difficulties establishing a rapport with others are going to go deeper into these kinds of forums to interact with others, that will further shrink their social network." In Rahamathulla’s research he found that while Internet chat rooms are not the ideal form of communication for most of these "addicted" teens, it is better than no interaction at all. The research revealed that these teens are lonely, usually unpopular and that chat rooms contribute to some teenagers fearing one on one situations. Internet chat rooms do not seem like they are targeting this specific demographic, when it is considered that there are chat rooms for basically every interest any human in the world could think of. So, if Internet chat rooms are not targeting lonely, unpopular teenagers, but those are for the most part the people becoming "addicted" to these chat rooms, are these chat rooms making the people who are interested in them addicted and lonely ... ...there is no immediate solution for the problem that is at hand. But it is a problem that needs to be addressed. Internet chat rooms are making the worlds youth into anti-social, lonely people. Internet chat rooms are enticing children to go out and meet much older people that they should not be associating with and no one is stopping them. Parents and Internet companies both need to make drastic changes for the benefit of the world’s youth. Impact of the Telephone Essay

If you didn’t have the telephone then how would you contact people? You wouldn’t be able to easily. If you wanted to talk to people you would have to go to their house, meet them somewhere, or write to them. That would be difficult. The world’s communication has been upgraded by the telephone. The telephone had a large impact, it made business more efficient and it saved money from having to travel back and forth from far places, and it made transactions able to occur more quickly. It led to instant communications around the world and even led to the Internet. The telephone also opened up many new job opportunities by starting new companies and building and making more telephones for the rest of the country and world. (www.learnnc.org) Before the invention of telephones, mail was a large part of life. This was mainly because it was the only way of communication. Telephones are a huge part of today’s life. As telephones became more and more advanced they also became more and more popular. Now it is the most common way of communication. (www.slideshare.net) Our modern day telephone system has made our communication system more unified. Telephone has bridged the gap of long distance communication. This expansion of the telephone can never be stopped long as the telephone business continues to build for the future. No single year in the fifty of telephone history has recorded a shrinkage in telephone use. Telephones in the United States have multiplied from Bell’s one telephone t to more than 17,000,000, or one to every seven persons in the United States and the average number of telephone conversations daily has risen from less than 8,000,000 in 1900 to 70,000,000 in 1926. (www.learnnc.org) There is no overacting, the public demand for telephone service increases with every extension and improvement of that service. Apparently, the telephone industry is destined to grow as long as the United States grows. Certainly it will continue to grow as long as individuals and groups through improved communications find it possible to increase production and sales, leisure and wages, profits and the pleasantries of life. Before the invention of the telephone, messages were sent mainly via messenger and mail. Due to the great distances being travelled to deliver  messages, only important messages were being sent. Alot of the jobs that are existent today were non-existent during the phone-less decades. For example, the telecommunications industry and the eCommerce industry were not in existence during these times. If a person needed information about goods or services being offered in the community they would ask a friend or relative, or they would get on their horses and wagons and travel down to the local business and inquire for themselves. Before the invention of the telephone, people would rarely immigrate to other places for the fear of not being able to communicate with their family and friends. Communities had more of a social setting than they do now. Strangers would communicate with each other and friends would gather to discuss the latest gossip and enjoy each others company. In current technological times, we are no longer interested in socialising with the people around us, not even our neighbors. People were more aware of their surroundings and they appreciated it more than the modern day technological society that we live in. Traditions were held up and culture expanded. How do smart phones affect in our daily lives?Research has found that smart phones satisfy all social communication needs. this lead to addiction, lack of concentration and even lack of sleep. Smart phones have a huge negative effect in the workplace, because workers can not meet their deadline. The aim of this research was to find out if it is worthy getting a smartphone? and how is it going to benefit the person buying it? Smart Phones are highly advanced and are good in multitasking, but they changing our lives in a negative way. people do not communicate as much orally and become antisocial. Students do not concentrate in class. People become addicted to the phone and dependable. These are the effects that smart phones have on us.In conclusion: as good as smart phones are the negative effects are out weighing the positives. It is hard to say whether the invention of the telephone was a good thing or a bad thing for our society. Some might argue both sides. When attacking this issue there are a lot of different facts a person has to look at before they can decide. Some of the advantages of this technology are: In the event of an emergency, the proper authority can be contacted, we can now  communicate with our family whenever we wish (this promotes strong family ties),and businesses can now spread their services throughout the world. Some disadvantages that the invention of this technology had brought about are: Loss of traditional culture, increased health problems due to radiation, lack of privacy, and increased disturbances and lack of awareness of our surroundings. Although, there is some good and some not so good effects to this invention, it is hard for me as a person of this generation to be able to imagine a picture of a world without telephones. We know that it is the most important technologi cal invention because of the length of time it has been utilized and the rate in which its use continues to grow throughout the world. I believe that it has created a more controlled environment and should continue to be utilized for years to come. Works Cited â€Å"1.5 The Impact of the Telephone.† The Impact of the Telephone. Listening Skill is a neglected Art Essay

In learning a particular language, we enhance the communicative language skills; the receptive skills and productive skills. Receptive skills include understanding through listening and reading. Productive skills are speaking and writing. When we learn English as a language and when we utilize this language as a tool for communication, we learn and make use of all these communication arts. But normally, people become strong in some skills and weak in others. Most of the time, Listening is considered to be a weakness. Listening is considered as a neglected art. Almost everyone can hear, but few can really listen. Many people fail to recognize the art of listening and the value of listening to acquire information. They tend to ignore the fine line that separates the distinction between the natures of passive listening and active listening. In our daily conversation with people, meetings or conferences, and formal classroom set up, listening is believed to be of paramount concern. People tend to neglect the art of listening because of the different language barriers apart from the dominant fact that people are fond of talking rather than listening. Few people can achieve understanding the essence of what has been said by a certain speaker because they have not mastered the skills necessary for listening. These language barriers include poor vocabulary to be able to comprehend what has been spoken about, lack of interest on the speaker or what we call non-egocentric pro-social behaviour which is essential on the part of both, the speaker and listener. Absence of focus or concentration which may be influenced by physical and even emotional barriers can hinder listening. Close-mindedness and over-stimulation which make a person too quick to judge because of the speaker’s accent, appearance, impression and poor delivery can also be contributing factors why listening is neglected. People tend to develop more negative listening habits rather than positive listening habits which definitely hinder listening to be able to comprehend the essentials of what has been listened to. According to K Crawford, An open ear is worth much more than an open mouth, so listen! 2. Oral communication skills are a significant factor in the acquisition of facts and in the process of learning. Oral communication skills refer to speaking and listening competencies. These are necessary to be able to participate verbally in discussions and interactions, to be able to exchange ideas and concrete information, to make clear and persuading presentations and of course to interact with a variety of audiences. These skills are utilized as we communicate with other people. These are essentials in the acquisition of facts. We learn from listening and at the same time we are able to figure out facts when we air out our thoughts and opinions through speaking. Oral communication is the ability to talk with others to give and exchange information and ideas. We acquire information when asking questions. We give information when giving directions and we exchange messages when coordinating our work tasks with others. Explaining and persuading are essentials in the process of learning especially to us as teachers. Our students learn more and easily persuaded when things are explained well. It is said that oral skills are at the very foundation of literacy. Speaking and Listening, such as in a classroom talk, help students to learn, to reflect on what they are learning, and to communicate their knowledge and understanding. Thus, oral skills are important in the process of learning. These communication skills are significant factors in acquiring information and learning. 3. What we do is far better than what we communicate basically means that we have to walk the talk not just talk the talk. An old adage says, â€Å"Actions speak louder than words†. That is so true. Benjamin Franklin advocates, â€Å"Well done is even better than well said†. According to Arnold Glasow, â€Å"An idea not coupled with action will never get any bigger than the brain cell it occupied.† These quotes elaborate the importance of the fulfilment of what has been communicated, planned, and agreed. What has been planned must be realized and executed. For instance, a lesson well planned will never be effective unless it is executed and proven. In the context of education and learning, this has something to do with the application of what has been learned and caught. As mentioned in the Domains of Bloom’s Taxonomy, Knowledge is more of a fundamental skill compared to Application. Therefore, application is far better than knowledge same thing with Cognitive domain and Psychomotor domain. Learning (cognitive) would not be as effective as expected without psychomotor skills (actions).Students may acquire information and learn facts but I believe applying these acquired information and learned facts on a real life situation is even more relevant. On the context of real life situation, actions are aid to be mirror of the mind. What a person thinks is expressed when she/he speaks. The ideas have been communicated. When we communicate with people, we can only let them know what our opinions and thoughts are, we only let them understand what we say. Persuasion has always been a question. When we communicate, we may be understood by other people but we seldom persuade their minds most especially if what we say is against or far even more opposite to what other people see from us. This explains what William Shakespeare said, â€Å"Action is Eloquence†. It is through actions where we give judgements, fulfilments and realizations to all that have been communicated. I’d like to end my response with these inspiring lines about how actions are vital in our lives. â€Å"The vision must be followed by the venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps, we must step up the stairs. â€Å"- Vance Havner,

Company Employment Essay

Sheena had worked for the same Fortune 500 Company for most 15 years. Although the company had gone through some tough times, things were starting to turn around. Customer orders were up, and quality and productivity had improved dramatically from what they had been only a few years earlier due company wide quality improvement program. So, it comes as a real shock to Sheena and about 400 of her co-workers when they were suddenly terminated following the new CEO’s decision to downsize the company. After recovering from the initial shock, Sheena tried to find employment elsewhere. Despite her efforts, after eight months of searching she was no closer to finding a job than the day she started. Her funds were being depleted and she was getting more discouraged. There was one bright spot, though: She was able to bring in a little money by mowing lawns for her neighbors. She got involved quite by chance when she heard one neighbor remark that now that his children were on their own, nobody was around to cut the grass. Almost jokingly, Sheena asked him how much he’d be willing to pay. Soon Sheena was mowing the lawns of five neighbors. Other neighbors wanted her to work on their lawns, but she didn’t feel that she could spare any more time from her job search. However, as the rejection letters began to pile up, Sheena knew she had to make an important decision in her life. On a rainy Tuesday morning, she decided to go into business for herself taking care of neighborhood lawns. She was relieved to give up the stress of job hunting, and she was excited about the prospects of being her own boss. But she was also fearful of being completely on her own. Nevertheless, Sheena was determined to make a go of it. At first, business was a little slow, but once people realized Sheena was available, many asked her to take care of their lawns. Some people were simply glad to turn – the work over to her; others switched from professional lawn care services. By the end of her first year in business, Sheena knew she could earn a living this way. She also performed other services such as fertilizing lawns, weeding gardens, and trimming shrubbery. Business became so good that Sheena hired two part-time workers to assist her and, even then, she believed she could expand further if she wanted to. Questions 1. What options might Sheena consider if the ordinance is passed? Name two advantages and two drawbacks of each option. (20 Marks)

Lived experience of war, an ethnographic methodology Essay

Lived experience of war, an ethnographic methodology - Essay Example It cannot be ignored that some of the soldiers involved in the Vietnam lost their lives. However, it is inappropriate for the government to brush aside the long term effects of this war as it is seen to have caused major physiological implication on both the soldiers who survived and the families of the soldiers who dies in battle. It is under this backdrop that this paper will analyse the profound effects on the soldiers returning from the war in Vietnam and the current psychological state of the families of the soldiers who died during the war. â€Å"Research has established that participation in the military requires an individual to be psychologically prepared for anything that can happen† Kashdan et al, 2006, p.127). Over the years, this tradition has been carried through the various training programs that military men and women have to undergo training to psychologically prepare them for the task of ensuring national security. However, an important part that is ignored is the fact that such soldiers have family who begs the question, are these families physiologically prepared to what might happen to their kin in battle. Despite the fact that both nations suffered heavy casualties both in terms of human lives and destruction of property, the fact that the war was being wage din Vietnam has had profound effects on those who survived the war. In addition, the various films depicting the war and its aftermath do not help the situation either. For most U.S citizens, the Vietnam War is over but so many years later, it is as if the war happened a few years ago. According to Laufer et al. (2004, p.65) among the worst affected by the war are the war veterans who have long been forgotten after sacrificing their lives to ensure the peace and stability of the U.S nation. During and after the war, most of the soldiers who surprisingly have shortly graduated from the defence college were

Discussion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 101

Discussion - Essay Example Enormous social gap developed between peons and political leaders. Native workers received substandard wages and were forced to pay head taxes to the colonial regimes. In addition, agricultural village communities integrated into wider regional and global economic patterns, and because few peasants had enough capital to own and manage land, much of the land fell into hands of colonial settlers. So, labor and capital were thus disconnected from the moral economy (Scupin, 300). Because of stifling the economic development a monocultural dependency was created, which made almost impossible for these nations to develop diversified resources for the international market. Another appeared problem is that the internal market was rather limited for their products, as their own societies lack a consuming middle class. That is why these societies remained peripheral, developing as expert platforms (BÃ ©rtola, 35). Nevertheless, colonialism had a positive effect, as it gave way to political movements based upon nationalism and independence. These movements represented anticolonial sentiments and resulted in creating many new countries (Scupin, 319). But still many regions remain devastated and underdeveloped because their economies are heavily dependent on the wealthy core countries and people through these countries have to adapt their traditional social and cultural mechanisms adjusting to effects of
